We arrived before the sun came up.
It was 44° and our teeth were chattering! (For those of you back East, 44° is cold to those in SoCal!)
The sun started to come up as we were setting up our tent.
Thanks to that innocent looking truck sitting next to Duke's, something was in the air...
The smell from that truck was more awful than almost anything you could imagine... and it was STRONG! The smell of human vomit is the closest comparison. It was horrendous.
Thankfully the truck finished it's business and we started the pound up just as the sun was peeking it's pink rays over the horizon.
Dale begins his "workout" of water carrying...
Nice pile! Great sand today. No weird patches like the November pile.
Starting with the top of the surfboard.
Using a "fix" solution on the final details. It contains mostly water with a small amount of Elmers glue dissolved in it. It's applied after carving to help keep fine details from crumbling after the sand dries.
Using a "feather" duster to remove loose sand.
Making this into a wooden sign.
Starting to carve the words.
Finishing off the most important part of the sculpt... the website where people can read a gospel message: needGod.com.
Starting to carve the numbers.
Getting some help from our youngest. You have to keep the sand wet to get sharp detail. A garden sprayer works wonderfully.
Our oldest gets a "sand dollar." The guys you see up on the pier called him over to tell him they could see a dollar down in the sand below them... Our boy was happy to retrieve that! :-)
People from the pier take pictures all day. Sometimes they talk amongst themselves (unaware that because of the prevailing wind we can clearly hear almost everything they say) and sometimes they raise their voices to talk to us on purpose. Makes for a lively interaction sometimes!
Close-up on the most important part!
We're tired and happy!
As the sun moves, some of the details stand out better.
As we finished our sculpt rather early, and Ray had invited us to come to the end of the pier for his regular open-air preaching time, we headed that way. Here Dale took a picture of Anna taking a picture of Ray's trivia "binder" that he uses to help draw a crowd.
Ray invited Anna to share the gospel with a crowd. She talked to a 14 year old boy named Aaron. Please pray for Aaron as he seems to understand the gospel message and perhaps was beginning to feel conviction.
Then, of course, we headed out to Ruby's for a delicious burger!
Thank you all for your prayers. :-)
